Motorway users have been reassured by police that they won’t end up in Squid Game if they follow diversion signs.

Thames Valley cops moved to counter any concerns after it was pointed out to them that there was a striking similarity between the symbols featured in the South Korean hit series and those on the road signs, reports the Mirror.

Squid Game, which has proved to be Netflix’s most successful launch so far, involves debt-ridden contestants competing in childhood games for the chance of winning huge cash prizes – but in a brutal twist to proceedings, if the contestants lose, they are killed.

Players are invited to Squid Game by being handed a mysterious business card featuring a circle, a triangle and a square, with the same shapes featuring on the masks of those who run the games and carry out the executions of the losers.

Those symbols are often used on road signs to help motorists follow diversions, which prompted the Thames Valley force to have a little fun on social media after drivers on the M4 near Slough made the link.

The roads policing Twitter account posted: “Evening all. So, we can confirm that by following this signage from the M4 Junction 5 in Slough will not lead you to the popular Netflix series Squid Game.

“It’s just directions for diversion routes during the roadworks…phew!”

One Twitter user joked that the police must have followed the sign to find out that it didn’t lead to Squid Game, and the force responded to say: “We might have, but we made sure we didn’t choose the umbrella!”

Another replied, saying: “Gutted, could have done with the money.”

Circles, triangles, squares and diamonds are used on road signs to map out emergency diversion routes and are usually covered up to be unveiled in situations such as road closures to guide drivers around the issue.

Squid Game has overtaken Bridgerton to become Netflix’s most successful launch yet, with 111 million viewers watching the series in its first month.
